We live 20 miles from the nearest grocery store in Salida. We knew this when we bought the property, but I grew up in a rural area, so I was prepared for the consequences. For my mother, it meant three meals a day for 6 people every single day of the year -- not a restaurant in sight! In fact, I did not get to eat in a restaurant until I left home to go to college in the UK at age 17. I worked my way through college by working... you guessed it... in the college kitchen. We churned out hundreds of tasty meals every day, and I enjoyed the experience.

My kids garnered much sympathy from their teenage friends when they stated the truthful fact that they had never had a pizza delivered to our house.

I love to cook, and I love to have people over to enjoy meals with us. So any time you are in our neck of the woods, you would be welcome to join us for lunch or dinner!

Today it was time to refill the granola jar, whip out a rum cake for my book-club meeting tomorrow, use up some of this summer's apple sauce from our tree in an easy quick bread, and toss a pot roast into the dutch oven to justify having the oven running all morning.

There was just time to duck over to the studio and pack the daily fiber orders in time to catch the post. Then I had to buckle down and wind some wool and pack some kits to stay abreast of our wonderful customers. In the winter I try to get ahead on some of the winding and packaging, 'cos once spring shows its smiling face, I'm anxious to get my seeds started in their little pots in anticipation of another season of organic veggies to restock my freezer and pantry.

I tend to schedule more activities into my day than the hours permit....so things like this blog invariably get pushed aside in favor of more "urgent" tasks.
But this year I aim to change that!
However, as the owner of Outback Fibers, the daily routine of packing customer orders does not make for exciting blogging... though it does pay the bills.
I have occasional days when I have time to make felt, and I wish those days were more frequent. I have a studio full of fabulous fibers that I daily ship off to lucky felters who get to make all those wonderful things I have in my head.
But, in moving to Colorado, part of my life goal was to immerse myself in a lifestyle different from our previous urban setting. I grew up in Tasmania where we grew all our own fruits and veggies, milked a cow, made our own butter, bread, granola, preserves etc...and I miss that. I have always done some of that during the years we raised our children, but our current location offers so much more opportunity for such endeavors.
So my blog from here on will encompass the many aspects that are important in my life. Some days it might be the product of my felting studio... and other days it might feature the product of my kitchen, or my garden, or just some of the scenic reasons we selected this part of Colorado for our "golden years". Even my grandchildren may show up from time to time as they make the trip up from Texas and get to participate in this "sustainable lifestyle" we have chosen to pursue.

I recently had time to work with the Truffles prefelt, topped with the Milan merino harmonies and a touch of Milan bombyx silk.
But now... I need to head to the kitchen.....
We are located in the Bighorn Sheep Canyon flanked by the Sangre de Cristo mountains on one side, and the Arkansas River valley on the other. It is a wonderful place to surround yourself with inspiration and fiber! We hope to bring in various teachers for classes; as well as simply offering the space for those who want to work with a small group of fellow fiber artists in a setting that provides supplies, fiber, workspace, food, lodging and scenery...all in one location.

Meanwhile... happy felting and let us know if you are interested.

In keeping with the promotion of the arts, we at Outback Fibers will be planning a series of summer workshops to coordinate with the two weeks in August 2014 when the exhibit will be on display. It will be two years in the making as construction will encompass some 42 miles of the river. There will be almost 6 miles of draping in areas where river rafters will be best able to float beneath to view the work. We are just a short walk from the river, so what could be better than to take in some fresh air, some fiber, some felting, some floating, some fly-fishing... (I just love those "f" words!).

Workshops will be posted to the website closer to the time.Jill Gullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07442637096484914599noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729128159295694510.post-26697679500743521782012-04-04T19:38:00.000-06:002012-05-21T13:59:22.303-06:00Silk Yardage for NunoAs we settle into our new location here in Colorado, we have room to expand our line of products to include some luscious paj silk dyed to match our superfine merino harmonies line of wool roving.

Having Mark in the business is beginning to allow me more time to play with the products that everyone else gets to enjoy all the time! I took advantage of the Xmas slowdown to sample a number of the new colorways in this 5mm habotai silk and made a few scarves to show how beautifully the wool and silk can be coordinated in a delicate scarf that is appropriate for almost any climate.

The silk comes in 2.5m lengths (approx 100"), so plenty of length for a scarf or wrap. Full width is 45" but can be purchased in 15" or 30" if desired. Eleven spectacular colorways are currently available and just 15-20gms of wool is all that is needed to turn the silk into a froth of ruffles and luxury.

Here are some of the colors we offer in these beautiful Neck Knacks in paj silk for your creative pleasure.
That said... much has occurred during those months.

Outback Fibers (as in Mark and Jill and their "stuff") relocated to the tiny town of Coaldale, CO
in the Bighorn Sheep Canyon, leaving behind the 100+ degree heat of Texas in July of 2011. A 60'x40' metal building is nearing completion and will become the new home for all our wonderful fibers. In addition, we have room to host some exclusive retreats and felting workshops in the near future.

Close to the town of Salida, which features many artists and galleries, we are alongside the Arkansas River, home to some of the best fly-fishing and river rafting, and ATV tours in the country. So pull out that dusty old atlas (or for those who just love their computer... use googlemaps or click here for a map) and plan your next road trip to include the spectacular mountain scenery, a little hiking, a little fishing, and a visit to Outback Fibers studio.
Recently, one of our customers told us about her daughter, Haley Doherty needing to raise money for a school cultural trip. Haley's mom, Lori, knew Linda Wright who is a felt artist and a customer of Outback Fibers. Linda gave Haley a crash course in making felt flowers, fiber was purchased from Outback Fibers, and the rest is recent history. Word of mouth and some leaflets spread the word about Haley's project, and ... it looks like we have a new felt artist. The decorative, colorful flowers are popping up everywhere in Haley's home town, decorating clothing, hair, hats, etc. So far, she has raised over $3,000 since December.

Way to go Haley!!
Check out this link for some mittens made by simply knitting the hankies straight from the pile!

I used to knit more than I do, but these days my knitting is usually limited to the arrival of my grandchildren...
Here's my latest effort created for young Lachlan, born on January 10th.
As the wool base shrinks beneath the silk, it draws up the silk into pebbly puckers that can be emphasized by a minute or two in a hot dryer at the very end of the felting process while the felt is still slightly damp.Jill Gullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07442637096484914599noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729128159295694510.post-71405349134647066372011-02-10T09:31:00.000-07:002011-02-10T09:31:59.895-07:00Hands BlanketA close friend in our church community is hospitalized with oesophageal cancer. As an expression of our care and love for him, the families of our group each traced their hand-prints, which were then enlarged by approx 40%. The paper pattern was then cut from ProFusion prefelt for each of the hands. The hands were then placed in their relevant family groupings on a base of double-thickness ProFusion, which was then wet felted. You can see the tiny hand print of little Grant, our newest grandson, in the top left-hand corner grouping. He was only 6 days old at the time we traced his hand.
What better than to have two "trusty" helpers to make up mixed bags of colors!!
5-year old Ian and 3-year-old Anabelle (sporting a designer eye-patch for a juvenile opthamological condition), were delighted to be permitted to help their "Emee" in her studio.
This is one of the largest Quilt shows in the nation, and we wondered how much impact the needle-felting machines had made on the quilting world.

We were pleased by the response to our booth, and I had an opportunity to demonstrate the basics of wet-felting for 2 hours at their "Open Studio" station. I had a constant stream of people watching, and was able to convey several simple aspects of felting to a fairly interested audience.
She also took time to demonstrate at the "Open Studio", and generated interest in the needle-felting techniques she uses to produce her beautiful journal covers featured at the back of the booth.

Perparation for the show was enormous, and the 5 days of vending were exhausting. Both Suzanne and I agreed we would not undertake such a venture in the future. We were mobbed with customers, such that we got to see little or nothing of the wonderful quilt works on display at the show. Sales were fair, but you have to sell a lot of $5-$15 items to cover the exhorbitent booth fees and related expenses.
Chalk this one up to experience! But we were encouraged to see how much headway felting has made in the surface design world. At least our customers were coming to purchase... and not just to view the 3-headed novelty "feltmakers"!
A single layer is sufficient when ProFusion is used for the base layer.

And because I just had so much spare time on my hands (hah) I decided to also make seamless pocket inserts in the front of the coat. The beauty of the ProFusion is that it can be stitched on the sewing machine prior to felting. Thus two pockets were cut 40% larger than the desired finished size and machine stitched around 3 sides. The open edges of the pockets were placed inside a carefully cut slit in the base piece of ProFusion, with plastic bags both lining the inside of the pockets and surrounding the outside with the exception of the open edge which was basted into the slit with black thread. The dyed merino strips were placed either side of the open slit creating an almost invisible pocket opening.

After wetting out the fibers and rubbing the surface to connect all the layers, I used my trusty sander to stabilize everything and put a good skin on the felt. Then off to the front-loading washing machine (best investment yet for making large yardage), a short run on the express cycle produced a nice piece of finished felt.

The felt is a light garment-weight fabric suitable for Texas winters, and easy to machine stich without creating bulky seams. For northern climates, I would suggest a double layer of the ProFusion for the base.

The solid black sleeves were made from a single layer of ProFusion, well-fulled in the front-loading washer, cut in standard sleeve pattern, inserted into the coat and sewn in place.

Needless to say, the Quilt Show arrived before the coat was completed so it was displayed as a project "under construction". Current cooler weather may doubtless prompt me to make a decision about the lapels and the ultimate completion of the coat.

I just love silk hankies. Such a simple choice for some lovely surface texture, and so easy to use on the ProFusion background wool. And yes... I'm still cutting my daily quota of ProFusion in order to keep up with my customer response to this great product. My blister has become a callous, so as long as I can still fit my finger into the scissors, I'll be able to cut pain-free!
We're due for some 100 degree weather, so I'm heading to Colorado for a few days of cooling off. Orders that come in after Wed. will ship out after we get back on the 13th, so be patient... there's just me doing the work at this end.Jill Gullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07442637096484914599noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729128159295694510.post-28376789554234757682010-07-21T16:30:00.000-06:002010-07-21T16:30:31.830-06:00Chop..ChopThat $800 cutting machine is looking much more affordable as I chop my way through 15,000 meters of ProFusion!!
Such lovely colors, and no time to play with it myself - I feel like a chef with his jaw wired shut!
Those at the Midwest Felting Symposium will get to play with some of the ProFusion in a couple of their classes. And Susan has some for sale afterwards too.
I'm planning to have a booth at the Houston Int'l. Quilt Show in November, so if anyone is down this way for that, be sure to come by and see Suzanne Morgan and myself. Lots of lovely wools and silks to drool over... but please bring your own bib!Jill Gullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07442637096484914599noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729128159295694510.post-72606441736696634772010-07-19T21:56:00.000-06:002010-07-19T21:56:35.892-06:00Educating the great unwashed.Well... it's almost too much technology at once!
But since my hubby's tech job ended at the end of June, I have now had a full-time "technical assistant" on hand 24/7. Of course, he's full of suggestions... and this blog is the first of those. Next came the youtube suggestion, so here is my first attempt at educating the masses.
For those on the felters' chatlist who expressed concern that felting might have reached its peak, I'd like to suggest that we have only just scratched the surface. Probably 50% of my weekly customers at http://www.outbackfibers.com/ are totally new to the world of felting. So for those of you in the world of teaching classes, I suggest that you don't forget the beginners out there. I realize there are wonderful techniques and expert projects being offered... and that's great. But there is a constant stream of "newbies" who are frequently asking for basic felting classes. They often come from a totally non-fiber background, but have seen a piece of work that spoke to them in such a way that they want to know more.
I sometimes watch these fancy cooking shows and chef challenges, but I wonder if there aren't many out there who would just like a simple show that taught them how to make a nice sauce for a piece of fish, or even just a way to get chicken and a couple of vegetables to the table at the same time, in a way that will appeal to the family.
So let's spread the felting knowledge further abroad so that we don't have to explain what we do to those who would look at us as if we have three heads!

I've got a lovely piece of silk gauze beckoning, and a tentative project in mind.

My goal is to learn how to load pictures to this blog without the assistance of my "technical assistant" (read husband here), so hopefully I can post some work in the future.

Looking forward to seeing our newly-married daughter and her husband this weekend... just back from their honeymoon in Greece. I had made a little light-weight nuno wrap to go over my dress at the wedding, but even after going inside after the outdoor ceremony, it was still too warm to show it off! Nothing like Texas heat to make you want to wear wool!
